HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Two teenagers from Arizona were injured after their SUV crashed into the back of a semi-truck's trailer on an Ottawa County road.
Taryn Williams and her passenger, Jamie Bielmeir, were traveling in the left lane of northbound U.S. 31 near Greenly Street in Holland Township around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The truck was also northbound and had just merged into the "Michigan left" lane when police said the teens' vehicle drifted over and collided into the trailer.
Bielmeir later told police she was talking to Williams prior to the crash and that Williams may have been distracted.
The teens' Ford Explorer got wedged under the right, rear corner of the trailer.
It took rescue personnel about an hour to extricate Williams from the vehicle. The 18-year-old was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment to serious injuries.
Bielmeir, 17, suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized.
The teens were wearing seat belts, as was the truck driver, 52-year-old William Godfrey from Portage. He was not injured.
The SUV's air bags did deploy, according to the sheriff's department.
