HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A vehicle hit and killed a Grand Valley State University student after he ran into traffic on U.S. 31 in Holland Township late Saturday night, police said.
The accident happened around 11:30 p.m., the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department told 24 Hour News 8.
Rex Slingerland, 60, from Grand Haven was driving north and had a green light at the Felch Street intersection.
The pedestrian, 24-year-old Kyle Danial Ackerman from Brooklyn, Mich., walked away from a party at a hotel to smoke a cigarette and tried to cross U.S. 31 while the northbound traffic had the right of way, police said.
Officials said Slingerland was unable to avoid hitting Ackerman, who was wearing all black clothing and died at the scene. Authorities believe Ackerman's dark outfit was a factor in the accident.
Slingerland was not hurt.
The investigation into the incident continues.
