GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An Ottawa County sheriff's deputy has been charged with domestic violence in the county where he served as an officer.

Michael VanderLaan was arraigned two weeks ago following a Jan. 11 incident that resulted in "minor injuries" and "bruising" to the officer's wife, Michigan State Police said.

VanderLaan has been with the sheriff's department for 10 years, said Ottawa County Undersheriff Greg Steigenga.

"The Sheriff’s Office has been committed to a thorough and objective investigative process in this matter and it will be dealt with accordingly in an effort to maintain the level of professionalism that the public has come to expect from this agency," Steigenga said in a release Wednesday.

As a condition of his bond, VanderLaan is not allowed to carry a firearm.

After he was suspended for a time during the investigation, VanderLaan is now back to work in an "administrative assignment role pending a disposition through the court process," Steigenga said.

VanderLaan was charged with a misdemeanor in Ottawa County court.. State police said he was arrested but was not taken to jail -- as is standard procedure in cases involving minor charges and a cooperative suspect.
