ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOLOD) - A medical helicopter took a 21-year-old Allendale man to a hospital in critical condition after he crashed his SUV into a tree.

Eric Graverson has since been upgraded to serious condition.

He was driving eastbound at 2:30 a.m. Friday in the 5200 block of Pierce Street in Allendale Township when he lost control of his vehicle just after the road changed from gravel to pavement.

Graverson was the only person in the SUV and unresponsive when Ottawa County sheriff's deputies arrived. Rescue personnel extricated him from the vehicle and he regained consciousness before being transported to the hospital.

Deputies at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 they believe the victim is a student at Grand Valley State University.

They said alcohol may be a factor in the crash and Graverson was wearing his seat belt at the time.
