GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - Thursday, members of the Grand Haven girls basketball team protested several recent incidents of racial intimidation at the high school.
The varsity Lady Bucs wore tie-dyed shoelaces at their Thursday evening regional championship game. They were speaking out against at least six incidents of racial intimidation.
Federal and local authorities are investigating the incidents, which range from racial slurs to a student wearing a KKK-like hat. Six students have been suspended.
"By wearing these shoelaces, the Lady Bucs are displaying their disapproval of such acts as well as support for their fellow classmates who have been negatively impacted by them," an explainer of the shoelaces read in part. "The team chose the multi-colored tie-dye design to represent the multiple races of the student body.
The Lady Bucs beat Grandville Thursday night; 36-26.
