Hudsonville-area home goes up in flames

Fire chief: Heat made fighting fire more difficult

JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A house just outside of Hudsonville caught fire Wednesday night.

It happened in the 3900 block of Sunbrook Court in Jamestown Township.

When fire crews arrived on the scene around 9 p.m., the house was already fully engulfed. Smoke was visible from as far away as I-96 near Grandville Avenue.

By 11 p.m., the fire was knocked down and crews from several fire departments were working to eliminate hot spots.

Two adults and a few children were in the home when the fire started, but got out safely, according to fire personnel on the scene.

The heat wave made fighting the fire an even more exhausting task than usual.

"When you start adding temperatures to the fire, anywhere from 1,000 to 1,200 degrees, that really takes a toll on the personnel that are on scene," Georgetown Township Fire Chief Dan Hamming told 24 Hour News 8 on the scene.

He said the fire department called for more crews from surrounding areas so firefighters could take a break from the heat.

Hamming also said that the water pressure in fire hydrants was low. The fire chief speculated that may have been because so many people had been watering their lawns.

Authorities don't yet know what caused the fire, but they do know it started in the back of the home.
