ALLENDALE, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Valley State University debuted its renovated football stadium Saturday night during its 2012 home opener.

The Lakers put on quite the show in front of the big crowd on the big night -- beating Notre Dame (Ohio) 83-46 -- scoring the second-most points in school history.

GVSU is 2-0 on the season.

Lubbers Stadium is named after former GVSU President Arend D. Lubbers, who was key in raising money to build the facility in 1973.

The stadium has undergone numerous changes recently --

-- 2,000 more seats for a capacity of 10,440
-- The track around the stadium has been removed; that area now holds extra rows of seating to form a horseshoe-shape around the field
-- Four sections of seats now have chair-backs instead of bleachers
-- The student section has been expanded
-- The grass playing surface has been replaced with field turf

The renovations have occurred the last two years, costing $2.5 million each year.

Student tickets are free and all others can be purchased at http://www.gvsulakers.com/tickets/fb-tix.html.
