Police report: Bath salts in GVSU ODs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - 24 Hour News 8 obtained a second copy of a police report suggesting bath salts caused the overdose of four Grand Valley State University students in January.

24 Hour News 8 received the report in February. But GVSU Campus Police redacted several pieces of information  in the copy they originally provided, including witnesses statements on what was thought to be the drug that caused the ODs.

Attorneys for Grand Valley State University argued the cases were still under investigation, so it was appropriate to redact the information.

24 Hour News 8 believes the type of drug suspected by police was an important part of the story, and a way to alert students, parents and others of a potential problem.

In the unredacted portion of the report, witnesses tell police that at least some of the victim were thought to have ingested bath salts.

Police had also identified a person who had supplied the bath salts.   

The incidents happened at three Grand Valley dorms just before 11 p.m. on January 31, 2012.

The four students were described as  incoherent at first,  and later laughing hysterically and in some cases, fighting with officers.
 
All four ended up being hauled away in an ambulance to the hospital.

24 Hour News 8 is not able to learn their medical or legal status, since their names were redacted from the reports.

Two officers were injured in scuffles with the students.

At last report, GVSU officials were awaiting toxicology reports to confirm the drugs involved in the overdose.
