GH teen's license suspended in rollover

WEST OLIVE, Mich. (AP) - A judge has suspended the driver's license of a Grand Haven girl involved in a crash that injured a group of friends heading to watch a high school basketball game at Michigan State University.

Danielle Michaels, 17, appeared Thursday in an Ottawa County courtroom. She also was ordered to do 40 hours of community service. and put on probation for at least six months. The case will be reviewed after that six-month period.

Michaels will also have to attend counseling and a driver improvement course, as well as individual apology letters to the four other girls who were in the SUV on March 16 when it crashed on eastbound I-96 near Lowell.

Though three girls were ejected from the SUV and all five were seriously injured, they all survived. One of the victims, Brittany Olds, spent several months in a hospital.

A police report showed Michaels was distracted by a cell phone, speeding and talking with her friends.

She earlier pleaded no contest to committing a moving violation causing serious impairment of body function.

Michaels was 16 at the time of the crash. The girls were traveling to East Lansing to see the Grand Haven High girls' basketball team, which later won the state championship.
