GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - One person was injured and three others evacuated a building after an explosion and fire occurred at a Grand Haven marina Saturday.
Michael Rosencrance, 56, of Grand Rapids was working on his boat at the time of the blast, authorities said.
Members of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, Grand Haven City Fire Department, Grand Haven Township Fire Department and Ferrysburg Fire Department responded at 10:48 a.m. to North Shore Marina, 18372 Berwyck St.
Authorities said Rosencrance was doing some electrical work on a boat when he lit a torch, resulting in the explosion, according to a news release. The boat caught fire, as did the building. Flames spread to two other boats. The building sustained significant damage on the northeast wall and extensive smoke damage.
An eyewitness told 24 Hour News 8 he heard the explosion and said the victim was "burned very badly."
Three people evacuated from the building. Rosencrance was immediately transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. His condition is not known.
Officials said there was some minimal fuel run-off into the Grand River in the marina. Crews used booms and absorbent pads to deal with what the U.S. Coast Guard determined to be less than 1/2 gallon of fuel substances.
