Two people in home made it out

CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - An early morning fire in Crockery Township severely damaged a home in the 13000 block of Cleveland Street.

The fire stated just after One a.m. Friday.

The Fire Chief for Crockery Township, Jary Dreyer, told 24 Hour News 8 on scene that the people who live in the house told fire crews that they dumped ashes from an ash try into a bathroom trashcan before going to bed.

About an hour after going to bed they were woken up by the smell of smoke in the home.

The two people in the house were able to make it out and call for help.

Five fire departments were on scene, Crockery Township, Spring Lake, Coopersville, Ferrysburg and Grand Haven Township.

Dreyer told 24 Hour News 8 that the call was put out for extra help because he wanted to make sure enough help was on scene given fewer on-call firefighters may be responding because it was opening day of firearm deer season.

"With it being opening day of deer season we did call in extra departments just to make sure any shortage, any manpower that we would have been short from the deer season would have been covered."

The Red Cross was called in to help the family displaced by the fire.
