Fiancee of bicyclist hit by car mourns

OLIVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD0 - The family of a woman who lost her fiance in a deadly crash on Monday is heartbroken he will never see her in her wedding dress.

Devon Warne was riding his bicycle on 112th Avenue north of New Holland Street in Olive Township Monday night when he was hit from behind by a car. The driver told police oncoming traffic blinded her and she couldn't see Warne.

While police investigate the crash, Warne's fiancee, Shelby Tuhacek, mourns. She was informed of Warne's death via a phone call from his father.

"He said, 'Devon's gone, and I'm sorry,'" she recalled.

Tuhacek said she knew all she needed to about her fiance -- the 21-year-old loved her children and rode his bicycle all the way from Jenison to spend time with her family. She guessed it was about a 14-mile trip.

"He's the love of my life," she said.

Warne was at her home Monday night and helped 2-year-olds Serenity and Harmanie carve a pumpkin. He carved his initials into one before he left the house.

Warne did not have a driver's license. A judge suspended it after Warne did not pay court fees after he was caught driving without insurance. So he biked everywhere. He was struck after leaving Tuhacek's home and pronounced dead at the scene.

Tuhacek's two 2-year-olds won't get to see the man who treated them like his own. That worries their grandmother.

"Someone that's going to take care of my daughter, and her daughters. You don't just find someone that's that young who's willing to take on somebody else's children," Kristi Ruff said.

Warne's would-be mother-in-law hopes the driver faces some repercussion, and the thought that the driver may not leaves her frustrated.

Police are still investigating the crash. There has been no word from prosecutors if there will be any charges filed against the driver.

Warne's family does need some help paying for the funeral. They ask that any donations be sent to the care of
