HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - Unattended candles in an upstairs residence started a fire that forced the evacuation of Harbor Village Apartments in Holland, injuring two firefighters and one resident.
The fire began just after 10 a.m., officials told 24 Hour News 8. The resident in the apartment tried to put out the fire but was not able.
The two firefighters suffered bumps and bruises when a roof collapsed them. They were treated and released. One resident also suffered burns.
Everyone was evacuated at the apartment complex, 287 W. 40th in Holland, but not all pets have been found. Half of the building was unaffected by the blaze because of a built-in firewall.
There are 28 units that are not inhabitable and 25 people are at a temporary shelter set up by the Red Cross at the Central Wesleyan Church.
