Bus window shot out by BB pellets

Involved 14-year-old changing his story

JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Ottawa County authorities say a 14-year-old boy admitted to shooting a BB gun at a school bus on Thursday. But the teen talked to 24 Hour News 8 Friday and changed his story.

A Beaverdam Christian School bus was shot by BB pellets near 24th Avenue and Greenly Street in Jamestown Township while dropping off students, according to Stephanie Miedema, principal of the Hudsonville-area school.

There were 11 students on the bus when the bus driver heard a popping noise. A BB had hit and shattered one of the windows just as she was dropping off some of the students.

No one was hurt, but the driver called 911.

A 14-year-old who was not on the bus and lives in the area admitted his involvement, Ottawa County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Bennett told 24 Hour News 8.

But the teen told 24 Hour News 8 Friday he was there when the Beaverdam Christian School bus was shot, but that he's not the one who pulled the trigger.

He said a friend had his BB gun and was shooting at birds when he accidentally shot the bus.

"We feel very confident in our investigation at this point," said Bennett Fridya. "We feel very confident in the statements that were made by the young suspect yesterday, so we will proceed in that fashion. Now, this case is still open, so we won't discard any new information."

The case has been turned over to the county prosecutor's office. Bennett said he's not sure if charges will be filed against the teen.

"Here, we're talking about youthful indiscretions, whatever version of the story you believe," Bennett told 24 Hour News 8. "Was there intent to do harm? It doesn't appear there was intent to do harm."
