Layla still serious; DHS takes action

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A five-month-old girl injured in what authorities say is a case of abuse remains in the hospital in serious condition -- and her father is still close-mouthed about what caused baby Layla's injuries.

Baby Layla's father, Ryan Kupres, has not been charged with anything, and police aren't officially calling him a suspect.

Kupres, 27, was frustrated when 24 Hour News 8 tried to speak with him about his daughter on Tuesday.

"I didn't do anything to my daughter," he told 24 Hour News 8 Tuesday .

Kupres spent a year in jail, and nearly 18 months on probation after being convicted in 2009 of abusing his then-infant son.

The boy, who wasn't even a month old at the time, suffered two head injuries, a broken leg, fractured knees and a fractured ankle.

Baby Layla also had a head injury and a broken ankle, as well as two broken legs and two broken arms.

Monday, the Department of Human Services started the process that would take away Kupres' visitation rights with his son and parental rights of Layla.  The petition is also seeking to terminate Layla's mother's rights, as well.  

Court documents say Layla's mom knew that Kupres had a past history of abusing his child and put Layla at "unreasonable risk of harm."

The documents also say Layla's mom "continues to disbelieve that Ryan would cause injury to Layla."

In the 2008 case, Kupres admitted to police he had shaken his infant son.  24 Hour News 8 learned Wednesday the boy has recovered from his injuries, and is living with his mother.  

Family members of the boy said they were "shocked" when they first heard what happened to Layla, but said they didn't want to comment and drag him back into the spotlight.  

Documents said Kupres completed a parenting class in 2009, a class on infant care and an anger management class.

Layla's mother is cooperating with authorities.  Kupres has not spoken to authorities.
