Broken bones not accidentally caused, said docs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 5-month-old girl is hospitalized with broken bones and a serious closed head injury that doctors said were not accidentally caused.

The girl, Layla, was initially taken by her parents to a Zeeland hospital, but she was transferred to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital on Saturday. Doctors there noticed the injuries and called authorities.

Her father, Ryan Kupres, is not a suspect in the abuse, though investigators want to talk with him. Her mother is cooperating with the investigation, but Kupres is not.

Tuesday, he told 24 Hour News 8, "I don't know what happened to my daughter."

The 27-year-old spent a year in jail for abusing a 3-week-old baby in 2008. That baby also had broken bones, and recovered. Kupres pleaded no contest to the charges.

"At this particular time, we have not made an arrest. We're still working towards the conclusion of the case," Ottawa County Lt. Mark Bennett told 24 Hour News 8. "We'll work the investigation and simply try to determine the facts."
