11-year-old tries to abduct 6-year-old

JENISON, Mich. (WOOD) - An 11-year-old boy is in juvenile detention, accused of trying to abduct a 6-year-old boy from his yard.

The incident began around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in a neighborhood north of Chicago Drive and 12th Avenue in Jenison.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 the younger boy was playing outside his home, and the older boy tricked him to come out of the yard. The boys know each other from school and are not friends, police said.

The 11-year-old then grabbed the 6-year-old by his jacket's collar, police said, and started to drag him toward the street.

The 6-year-old's stepmother came outside and saw the older boy still dragging her son through yards several blocks away, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

The woman ran to the boys and tried to free her stepson. She then struggled with the 11-year-old and was able to get her stepson out of the grasp of the older child.

She took her stepson back home and called police.

Deputies arrived to investigate and arrested the older child on charges of attempted and unlawful imprisonment. Police said he will not be charged as an adult.

The 11-year-old is originally from Grand Rapids but currently living in Jenison. Police said he has had prior run-ins with the law.
