HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - Ten people at Hope College have reported cases of what is believed to be the Swine Flu. One of them tells the tale of what he went through.
"I was really tired all the time. I had really terrible body aches to the point of excruciating pain," the student, who didn't want to be identified, told 24 Hour News 8.
The student is one of 21 in Michigan that has a probable case of the H1N1 virus. He says the most painful symptom for him was the body aches.
"I had like tears running down my face," he said. "I would go from a headache, then I would be cold, then I would be hot, and then I would have body pains."
Although he says the symptoms were bad, he says he never feared for his life.
"Never to the point where I was excruciated in pain...or was I sick enough to where I was like 'oh my gosh, this is the end.'
Nonetheless, Saturday, Mexico's health secretary said 19 people are confirmed dead as a result of the virus.
The student we spoke with says he doesn't know how where he came into contact with the sickness. He says he has not been to mexico, and neither have any of his friends. He says he lives in an apartment with other students. They have not gotten sick.
Despite the reported illnesses, there are some major events that will still take place in Holland. Tulip Time is underway. Hope College's commencement for Sunday was not canceled.
The Center for Disease Control urges everyone to continue being
vigilant about hand washing. It is also suggested that those who
are ill avoid contact with the public.
