HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - A man who police say was driving while intoxicated will be charged for hitting and killing a 19-year-old Holland man and injuring his friend.
Curtis Jacobs died Sunday evening. His friend, Christian Van Wyngarden, continues to recover from his injuries. Van Wyngarden is listed in fair condition.
The two were riding as part of a group when they were hit Saturday morning near U.S. 31 and Quincy Street. Police say a 44-year-old Wyoming man was intoxicated when he drove through a red light at the intersection. The suspect fled the scene with a shattered windshield, but was caught a short distance away.
Jacobs had been a part of the youth group at Calvary Reformed Church in Holland that was conditioning with part of the group to bike from Traverse City to the Upper Peninsula.
After the accident, his condition was believed to be stabilized, but deterioated Sunday afternoon and he died a short time later.
"When I left the hospital today, I had been gone about a half-an-hour when I received the call that Curtis had lost oxygen to his brain and had died," Bob Herman, the youth director at Calvary Reformed Church said Sunday.
Herman had visited Jacobs at the hospital before he went into surgery. He says he was struck by Jacobs' demeanor.
"Even in his distressed state, Curtis was still wanting to be polite and acknowledge the people around him - even through the oxygen mask," Herman said.
Some of the members of the Calvary youth group were gathered at the hospital when Jacobs died.
"It's gonna take a lot of us a long time to really process this that happened ...including the other bike trip members who were on that ride yesterday morning- who were feet from these two young men getting struck by that vehicle," Herman said.
The man who investigators say is responsible will be formally charged on Monday. Investigators will release his identity at that time.
