GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The 911 tapes recorded just before an Ottawa County crash that killed three people still might not be enough for police to determine what exactly happened.
The sheriff's department is still searching for answers after the deadly crash, which happened around 4 a.m. Sunday in Zeeland Township, Lt. Steve Kempker said.
Deputies are re-interviewing all witnesses and waiting to speak with others, Kempker added.
The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-196, near Hudsonville. Investigators still aren't sure why 23-year-old Joel Gamet, of Kearney, Neb., was heading the wrong way when he crashed into a car driven by 19-year-old Amy Linares, of Holland.
Two people in Linares' vehicle died, along with Gamet.
Heavy fog hung in the air at the time of the crash, and police say that may be a factor.
The black box on board Gamet's car shows he was traveling close to the posted limit. Police are still awaiting toxicology reports, Kempker said.
Investigators are examining cell phone records of the victims and of witnesses who called 911.
They then will overlay all of that information onto a map, to try and piece together what exactly happened.
Lazardo Lineres remains in critical condition and Graciela Lopez has been upgraded to fair at Spectrum Health. James Chittasane has been released.
