HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - U.S. Marine Sgt. Cory Gritter was one of five injured while patrolling in Afghanistan after a roadside bomb detonated Oct. 28 beneath the group's vehicle.

The 22-year-old was severely hurt, but not as badly as another Marine in his group who had to have both legs amputated, according to The Holland Sentinel.

Gritter, a 2005 Holland Christian graduate of Graafschap, has schrapnel nearly covering his body. It's his right arm and left leg most affected, his father told the newspaper.

The same day as the explosion, he was airlifted to Germany for emergency surgery. Afterward, he was flown to Maryland's Bethesda Naval Hospital for more recovery and treatment.

His parents flew to meet him in Maryland. Gritter still requires more surgery. His discharge date is October 2010.
