GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 22-year-old man was critically injured after nearly drowning in the water at an Ottawa County park Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened just before 3 p.m. at the pond in the Georgetown Community Park in Georgetown Township.
More than a dozen park-goers created a human chain and began to search for the victim after his friends began calling for help.
Police identified the victim as Cipriano Ramirez of Grand Rapids.
Ramirez was submerged for between five and seven minutes before those helping with the human chain found him.
Two medical professionals, who happened to be at the park, began doing CPR on the victim for about five minutes before emergency responders arrived. Others assisted by holding a towel over Ramirez to shield him from the sun.
"Everybody really came together and helped," said Angela Sarver, a certified nursing assistant who performed CPR on Ramirez. "He was not conscious. He was not responding to any stimuli."
By the time Ramirez was transported to the hospital, he had a pulse and was breathing.
He was taken to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital and remained in critical condition on Sunday morning.
Ottawa County emergency crews responded to four water-related emergencies on Saturday.
