HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A Kent County deputy who helped rescue a family from an apartment fire has pleaded guilty to operating while impaired.
In late February, Deputy Ed Kolakowski was among six Kent County deputies lauded for heroism after rescuing a family from a smoke-filled apartment.
About a week later, he was arrested in Ottawa County.
Deputies there responded to a disagreement between Kolakowski and his wife. When they arrived, they noticed he was intoxicated. That led to the arrest.
24 Hour News 8 learned Friday Deputy Ed Kolakowski's blood alcohol level was .17, which is more than twice the legal limit.
On March 5, he pleaded guilty to one count of operating while impaired.
Kent County Sheriff Larry Stelma told 24 Hour News 8 after the arrest Kolakowki will remain on paid suspension while the sheriff's department conducts its own investigation, which is separate from the criminal investigation.
