HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - Hope College has contributed nearly $4,000 to the Wes Leonard Heart Foundation.
Leonard, 16, collapsed after hitting the game-winning shot for his Fennville High School basketball team against Bridgman on March 3. An autopsy showed the junior died from sudden cardiac arrest.
Hope College then offered its DeVos Fieldhouse for Fennville to play its ensuing district tournament games there.
As part of its commitment to honor the memory of Leonard, the college says it has contributed the concessions proceeds from one of those games to the Wes Leonard Heart Foundation.
Use of the fieldhouse and services of staff at the first game were provided free of charge. Net proceeds from concessions sales were pledged to the foundation, as part of the college's commitment to honor the memory of Leonard, the college said in a news release.
A check for $3,991 has been presented to the Holland/Zeeland Foundation, which will administer the Wes Leonard Heart Foundation.
"We hope that our gift, as part of the Wes Leonard Heart Foundation, will provide the opportunities and education necessary to make sure that all steps are taken to avoid a tragedy like that of Wes," said Tim Schoonveld, co-athletics director at Hope. "We are grateful and humbled to have been part of the process and continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to the Leonard family and the Fennville community."
