A Holland man is dead after he was hit by a car on U-S 31 last night.

Police say 43-year-old John Willie Williams III was walking across the northbound lanes of U.S. 31 near the intersection of Felch Street at about 10 p.m. when he was hit by a northbound car.

The driver of the car, Evan Frost, a 36-year-old Chicago man, was with his wife and infant son when the accident occurred.

Police say Frost told them he didn't see Williams until the last second, and was unable to avoid hitting him despite trying to swerve.

Williams was wearing a black coat and dark pants at the time of the crash.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

No one in the car was hurt.

The crash is still under investigation.
