HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - A Holland teenager is back with her mother after spending a week with a man she met online, a man police now have in custody.
Her mother told 24 Hour News 8 the 14-year-old is bipolar, on medication, immature for her age, easily influenced, and met the 28-year-old man -- using the screen name mattma928 -- through the dating website Plenty of Fish. She admits her daughter may have lied about her age and said she was 18.
Matt Mahaney is now booked in Ottawa County on unrelated warrants Wednesday, but the girl's mom said he convinced her daughter to meet up and run away together.
The two met last Wednesday, and during the past week the family received a series of text messages asking for Social Security numbers and saying they were catching a train from Tennessee to Los Angeles.
But apparently they never left town.
Police tracked her down at the Wooden Shoe Motel in Holland and arrested the man.
The girl's mother said her daughter previously made contact with people on dating sites, and she tried everything to prevent it. She took away her daughter's computer and smartphone, but this time the girl used a Wii to connect to the Internet.
It was not something her mom was even aware was possible.
Mahaney was arraigned Thursday on charges of third-degree criminal sexual condict. Bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety.
He was also arraigned on three outstanding malicious destruction of property warrants and one outstanding assault warrant. Bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety for each of those charges.
