HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - The man who pleaded guilty to burning several flags in Ottawa County was sentenced Thursday -- and likely won't have to serve jail time.
Police say that William Howerton blazed a trail through Hudsonville and Jenison in July, setting fire to at least eight flags along the way, including two at Hudsonville City Hall.
Howerton, a former USPS employee, will have to pay almost $4,000 in fines. If he doesn't, he'll have to spend about 60 days behind bars.
He was released Thursday.
He's also accused of burning a flag at a Comerica Bank in Kent County. A hearing on those charges is scheduled for Aug. 23.
