Driver dies 17 days after crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Spectrum Hospital officials said Kelly Joel Ritsema, a 28-year-old man injured in a crash Aug. 16 , died in the hospital Thursday.

The Holland man crashed his pick-up truck into two trees on Aug. 17on Lakeshore Drive near Stanton Street in Port Sheldon Township.

Police said Ritsema was pinned in the vehicle for about 45 minutes before emergency crews were able to get him out

He remained hospitalized in critical condition for more than two weeks, before passing away Thursday.

Sheriff's deputies said Ritsema was driving his pick-up at a high rate of speed when he lost control and hit two trees. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
