HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - Ottawa County deputy Ryan Huizenga was arraigned in Holland Monday on charges stemming from the shooting of a GVSU student during a marijuana bust.

Huizenga stands accused of careless discharge of a weapon causing injury or death. Student Derek Copp, 20, was shot during the March 11 raid.

The deputy turned himself into authorities Monday and was officially charged. Huizenga was booked around 9:30 a.m. Monday, and was later released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

The judge told 24 Hour News 8 Huizenga's arraignment was moved up to 10:15 a.m. from its later scheduled time. He said this is "a sensitive matter and it's important there not be any appearance of special treatment. On the other hand, you have a person without any criminal intent and with a good personal record."

His preliminary exam is set for April 23.

If convicted, Huizenga could face up to two years and prison and lose his police certification.

24 Hour News 8 learned the Ottawa County Sheriff will decide Tuesday whether to place Huizenga on desk duty, allowing him back in a job so he can start collecting a paycheck again.

24 Hour News 8 will have more information as soon as possible.
