GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The 23-year-old man killed in a hit-and-run crash involving an alleged drunk driver was identified Friday as an all-state soccer player at Portage Northern High School.
Justin Bailey, 23, went on to letter for four years in soccer at Hope College in Holland, where he graduated last year with a degree in management.
He was killed in Thursday's crash on S. Sixth Street near Heritage Drive in Kalamazoo County's Texas Township. A second man in his car, Mark Angelocci, 25, was in critical condition Friday at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
Bailey, originally from Portage, and Angelocci, of Novi, were most recently living in Grand Rapids.
Bailey's aunt, Karen Pollich, said he was "a great kid, and we lost him."
His family said he and Angelocci were out selling AT&T U-verse door-to-door when the accident happened.
They were headed south on Sixth Street when a speeding pickup truck struck them from behind, sending their Chevrolet Lumina into an embankment, then airborne. The car struck about 10 feet high into the side of a tree.
Police told 24 Hour News 8 the truck was traveling 100 miles per hour.
"It's surreal because Justin did not deserve any of this," Pollich said, "and it's just surreal because this does not happen to people that have their lives together. It shouldn't happen this way."
Bret Frame, 30, whose criminal record includes a conviction for a May 2010 drunk driving, was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder , operating under the influence of liquor causing death, operating under the influence of liquor causing serious injury, destruction of police property and two counts of resisting/obstructing police officers. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Police said he fled the scene, but was arrested about a half-mile away at his parents' home on Crooked Lake. They say they used a Taser on him after he fought with deputies. He refused a breathalyzer test, so investigators drew blood from him and are awaiting test results.
Police said alcohol was a significant factor in the crash.
"It appears there may have been a willful or wonton disregard for other life, and that's why we've gone with this (second-degree murder) charge," Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said.
Pollich agreed. "Justin is gone, so i would say it's very fitting."
