2 ejected from airborne-rolled car

COOPERSVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - Two young men were ejected from a car after it went airborne and rolled several times into an Ottawa County cornfield.

The 21-year-old victims have been identified as Brandon Plumb from Grand Rapids and Dustin Fritch from Coopersville. They are in stable condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 the victims were not wearing seat belts at the time, and that alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

The vehicle was traveling north on 64th Avenue near Coopersville around 10:13 p.m. Tuesday when the driver -- Plumb -- did not stop at the intersection of Cleveland Street, police said.

The vehicle ended about 100 feet into a cornfield.

Rebecca Bennink, who lives nearby, heard the crash and was the first at the scene with her dad.

"We've had quite a few accidents and a lot of them are because people run this stop sign," Bennink told 24 Hour News 8.

"We found shoes here, shoes here...it was a mess. It looks like they rolled the car more than two or three times because the whole top of car was smashed and every window on it was busted out. It was in bad shape.

"We found the one guy that was screaming. And as I was dialing 911 my dad said, 'We have a second body,'"

One of the victims was responsive, and the other was facedown, unresponsive and barely breathing.

Bennink reassured the victims that everything was going to be OK, as they waited for rescue personnel to arrive at the scene.

"I said, 'I'm on the phone with 911,' and said, 'They're going to be here real soon.'"

Ambulances took the victims to the hospital.

Aero Med was originally dispatched to the scene because there was word of a third victim -- a woman -- also inside the car. But there was not a third victim, so the helicopter hovered above the scene, flashing its spotlight, assisting rescue personnel.
