HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - One person was shot after two men forced their way into his Holland apartment Thursday evening.

It happened around 8 p.m. at a complex in the 800 block of 16th Street near South Waverly Road in Holland. Police were first called to the scene for a breaking and entering, but found someone had been shot when they arrived.

A 43-year-old male victim told authorities he was confronted by two men who came to his apartment door with a handgun, according to a police release.

The victim tried to retreat into his apartment, but was shot once in the leg.

The victim said he doesn't know the suspects. Their motive is unknown, police said.

The two men fled north of foot. K-9 units attempted to track the men, but they were not found.

A witness from a nearby apartment complex told police both suspects were seen running north and may be connected to a red or burgundy 4-door vehicle that had one headlight burned out. The witness said it may be a Chrysler Concorde.

The suspects are described as black males of average build in their 20s. One was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt. The other wore a black hooded sweatshirt. Both wore bandanas.

Grand Valley State University's Holland Meijer campus was on lockdown for about an hour. Spokeswoman Mary Eileen Lyon told 24 Hour News 8 it was because of an attempted armed robbery less than a half-mile from campus. There were still students on the small downtown campus, she said, but she could not provide an exact number of how many.

That single-building facility is on South Waverly Road between 16th and 24th streets.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Holland police at 616.355.1100. Anyone who spots the suspects is asked to call 911.
