HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - A teenager suffered severe head and internal injuries after a semi-truck broadsided his car, police said.
The crash happened at the intersection of Cabill Drive and M-40 at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, according to the Holland Department of Public Safety.
Joshua Rutgers turned his southbound Mitsubishi Gallant into the path of the northbound truck and was struck on his vehicle's driver's side door, police said.
Rescue personnel extricated Rutgers from his car and took him to Holland Hospital. A medical helicopter later transported him to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where he is in critical condition.
The truck driver, 52-year-old William Veldboom of Holland, was not injured and interviewed by Holland police.
A portion of M-40 was shut down for about four hours as investigators were on the scene.
Alcohol is not initially believed to have been a factor in the crash that remains under investigation, police said.
Anyone who witnessed this incident and has yet to speak to authorities is asked to contact HDPS crash reconstructionist Jon Boeve at 616.355.1737.
