SHELBY, Mich. (WOOD) - The superintendent of Shelby Public Schools has been accused of spending school funds to buy things for himself.
Scott Lund, who was placed on paid leave on Dec. 8 and will resign effective Dec. 28, allegedly took thousands of dollars for his personal use over two years, according to Oceana County Prosecutor Terry Shaw.
The Michigan State Police began investigating Lund on Dec. 9 after members of the school board contacted them with concerns about Lund.
The misuse of funds allegedly began when Lund was principal of Oceana High School and continued after he became superintendent, Shaw said.
A 105-page MSP report indicates that between 2008 and 2010, Lund allegedly used $13,000 for personal use. He also allegedly used the school gas card for personal use between July and December 2011.
On the morning of Dec. 26, the Shelby School Board voted to unanimously to accept Lund's resignation in a sepcial meeting.
The board received his letter of resignation on Dec. 22. The letter did not contain details from Lund on why he would resign.
Lund's resignation becomes effective on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
A special board meeting was held on Dec. 12, during which the school board approved placing Lund on leave pending the results of the MSP investigation.
Mike Matlosz was appointed to interim superintendent. Matlosz is a retired superintendent who acted as interim superintendent for the district for about three months after Dana McGrew resigned in 2010 and before the board hired Lund.
Shaw told 24 Hour News 8 that he intends to have a decision on what Lund will be charged with in the next two weeks.
