HOWARD CITY, Mich. (WOOD) - A new alternative energy plant in West Michigan went online Friday.

One of the only installations of its kind in the world, the new commercial biomass system at Sietsema Farm Feeds in Howard City will produce electricity and heat by burning turkey litter.

Officials with the companies say the system will produce enough energy from 70,000 pounds of the litter to power the equivalent of about 400 homes.

They also say the process produces enough heat to warm about 150 houses.
