NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD0 - The Michigan State Police has assembled a task force to focus on the 1989 homicide of Shannon Siders of Newaygo.
According to the Michigan State Police, the task force will include the state police, the Newaygo County Sheriff Department, the Newaygo City Police Department and Newaygo County Prosecutor Robert Springstead.
Siders was 18 years old when she disappeared on July 18, 1989. Her body was found in Manistee National Forest three months later. An autopsy conducted at the time of her death concluded that she was murdered.
In September, the task force reviewed nearly 2,000 pages covering the 22-year-old investigation.
According to a release from the Michigan State Police, "Task force members are confident that advances in forensic science and information technology will generate new leads and aid investigators in bringing this case to a successful conclusion."
The task force has been convened at the same time that film-maker David Schock is about to premiere his new documentary, "Into the Dark," which focuses on Siders' case.
Schock told 24 Hour News 8 on Sunday that "the point of all this is to achieve a measure of justice."
Anyone with information on the death of Siders is asked to contact Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Scott Rios at 855.830.6843 ext. 222 or rioss@michigan.gov.
