NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD) - A 61-year-old Newaygo man was arrested Saturday night for the shooting death of another man, police say. Newaygo police chief Patrick Hedlund told 24 Hour News 8 the two men were friends for more than thirty years.
The victim is Michael Boynton, 51, of Newaygo. He was shot around 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Police told 24 Hour News 8 Boynton was sitting on a lawnmower when he was shot. The victim and suspect were facing each other at the time of the shooting.
Boynton was killed in the backyard of the suspect's home in the 200 block of Fremont Street in Newaygo.
Police believe the shooting was the result of an argument between the men that occurred a few weeks before.
Police officers arrived on the scene and found the man dead. Chief Hedlund said the suspect was waiting for police at the scene and was immediately taken into custody.
The suspect is currently in the Newaygo County jail awaiting arraignment. He is expected to be formally charged with open murder Monday.
The Newaygo Police Department was assisted on the scene by the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police.
Police are withholding the suspect's name pending arraignment.
