Cadillac, Mich. (WOOD) - A man died in a car crash after allegedly kidnapping a woman and both physically and sexually assaulting her in Wexford County on Tuesday.
The man has been identified as Robert Lee Mongar of Cadillac.
Mongar transported the woman into Mecosta County in her own car after placing her in restraints, according to Michigan State Police.
When he stopped for gas, police said the woman was able to escape into the gas station and received help from the employees.
Mongar then fled from the gas station and led police on a chase that went into Newaygo County where the suspect drove the car off the road and into several trees. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mongar did have a previous conviction for criminal sexual conduct in Osceola County. He was sentenced in 2002 to a maximum of 10 years in prison, according to court documents.
The victim's name is not being released.
