CUSTER TOWNSHIP, MIch. (WOOD) - A 10-year-old girl from the Grand Rapids area was accidentally shot in the head by a high-profiled air pellet rifle while camping in Mason County.
Authorities told 24 Hour News 8 the incident occurred Saturday afternoon as the victim and her family were on an island in the Pere Marquette River in Custer Township.
“It appears to have been purely accidental,” Mason County Sheriff Jeff Fiers told the Mason County Press . “Another relative had picked up the air rifle off of a table and it went off.”
A commercial fisherman on the river brought the injured girl to the boat launch near the island. A medical helicopter then took her to a Grand Rapids.
The victim's name has not been released, but authorities said she is in critical condition at this time.
Authorities spent much of the afternoon investigating the scene. When they returned to the boat launch, they had the air pellet rifle and several items of clothing.
