Standoff after donuts, shots fired

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Four people were arrested in Newaygo County Sunday morning after firing gunshots at a homeowner and then engaging in a standoff with police that lasted several hours.

Newaygo County Sheriff's Department officials said the suspects range in age from 17 to 24.

The group was first spotted around 4 a.m. Sunday squealing their vehicles' tires, creating donuts in a yard in the 8400 block of Mundy Avenue in Garfield Township.

When the homeowner came out to confront them, officials say, the suspects fired at least four rounds from a gun. The homeowner was not shot and called 911.

The suspects drove away and holed up in a home in the 300 block of Carol Street. Police arrived and the suspects refused to come out of the residence.

The Newaygo County Emergency Response Team was dispatched to the scene, but despite efforts to negotiate, the standoff lasted about four hours until one of the suspects' grandparents called and convinced them to surrender.

Six people came out of the house. Four were taken into custody and face several charges, including discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

Police recovered several guns from the scene.
   
The area around Carol Street was closed for about five hours.
