FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) - A couple from Fremont died after a storm caused a tree to fall on their home, trapping them in their bed, according to the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office.
Neighbor Larry VanNuil found the pair under the rubble of their home in the 4200 block of S. Sherman Avenue along Ryerson Lake around 7:29 a.m. Tuesday. He called 911.
Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced William (65) and Nancy (64) Vanderkieft dead at the scene.
The Jackson couple spent most of their summer at their Ryerson Lake cottage. They slept most night's in their bedroom, except for Monday night. The couple chose to sleep in the spare bedroom, which was normally reserved for their grandchildren.
A family member said Nancy Vanderkieft had a dream last week about a tree hitting the cottage, which is why they think the couple moved bedrooms.
The area where they slept was was the only corner of the house the tree hit.
Newaygo County was one of the areas that sustained the most storm damage. The National Weather Service reported wind gusts between 40 and 60 miles per hour.
