NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD) - A memorial walk was held in Newaygo on Sunday for a murder victim case that has gone unsolved for more than 20 years.
Shannon Siders was just 18 years old when she left her father's home on July 17, 1989. She was never seen alive again.
The popular teenager's badly beaten body was found 3 months later in the Manistee National Forest. Friends told us she was found in a place called 'the pit;' a popular place for teens to party back then.
Siders' father Bob spoke to 24 Hour News 8 in 1989, days after his daughter's body was found.
"I want to know who killed her," said Bob Siders. "I want them punished and I want to know what happened to make [them] kill her."
22 years after Shannon was murdered, friends and family still don't have answers.
"I spoke with some friends and they say they think about it every day, every week," Amie Bonner told 24 Hour News 8. Bonner was one of Shannon Siders' friends, and is still friends with her family to this day. "It's something that is ongoing to people, especially if they were friends of hers in the past."
The dozens of people who attended the memorial walk carried signs asking for justice. They've asked for the public's help before, but they hope this time will be different.
"People's circumstances change and the kids that were in high school back then hanging out, now they're older." said Amie Bonner. "Most of them have kids of their own, so you know, now is the time to speak out. Even if it's just something small, you never know, it could be something they're just missing."
If you have any information regarding the Shannon Siders case, you are asked to contact the Michigan State Police or the Newaygo City Police.
