ACME TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Meijer Inc.'s plans to open a store in a Traverse City-area community where the retailer funded a recall campaign in a zoning dispute several years ago are moving forward.
WWTV/WWUP reports the planning commission in Grand Traverse County's Acme Township on Monday approved a site plan application that includes a Meijer store. The issue now moves to the township board, which is set to meet Feb. 7.
Contentiousness arose in 2004 over store plans. Grand Rapids-based Meijer funded a 2007 attempt to recall the Acme Township board over the zoning dispute. Michigan officials fined Meijer $190,000 for violating campaign laws.
Last year, a prosecutor declined to bring charges over possible perjury during a 2007 deposition in a civil case related to the dispute.
