MECOSTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The State of Michigan is asking the federal government to step in and help residents along the Muskegon River whose homes were flooded.

Gov. Rick Snyder wants the Small Business Administration to declare a disaster along the river, allowing those affected by the flooding to get low-interest loans from the government.

Ice jam caused the Muskegon River to rise more than three feet Jan. 31 in Mecosta and Big Rapids townships, flooding at least two dozen residences and leaving many homeless.

The Governor's Office says representatives of the SBA were in West Michigan last week to assess the damage.
