FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) - A new clean energy facility that will convert food waste into renewable electricity was opened in Fremont Wednesday.

The Fremont Community Digester will convert 100,000 tons of food processing organic waste each year and turn it into 3 megawatts of renewable electricity for sale to Consumers Energy, a press release stated.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the chairwoman of the Agriculture committee, helped get the loan guaranty for the facility.

The digester will utilize food waste from Gerber Products and other regional food processors, and NOVI Energy will manage the facility.
