STANTON, Mich (WOOD) - - A car ran a stop sign, then crashed into a gas station and sandwich shop, igniting a fire that destroyed the building.
Around 2:10 a.m. Saturday, Montcalm County Sheriff deputies said, a driver ran a stop sign at M-66 and Main Street, then ran into the Stanton Mobil gas station and Subway sandwich shop.
Firefighters worked for hours to put the fire out and originally thought the driver was still inside the car and burning building.
It was discovered the driver had escaped.
A witness later told police a white male with a bloody face wearing a green shirt approached him several blocks from the scene. The man told the witness he had been in an accident and needed a ride. The witness refused.
K-9 units tracked the the suspect's scent to the Heartland Trail. Police believe he was able to get a ride from that location.
The search for the man continues Saturday evening.
