CADILLAC, Mich. (WOOD) - Officers from the Cadillac Police Department arrested a 24-year-old man Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse.

On Aug. 28 Wexford Central Dispatch received a call that a 1-year old boy was not breathing. North Flight EMS responded to the 700 block of S. Mitchell Street and transported the victim to Mercy Hospital Cadillac.

The child was soon flown to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The next day the Cadillac Police Department and Wexford-Missaukee Child Protection Services began an extensive joint investigation after they were notified of a possible abuse situation.

A warrant was issued by the Wexford County Prosecutor's Office for the 24-year old man who was the child's caretaker when the incident occurred.

The child remained hospitalized in Grand Rapids in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cadillac man's name has not yet been released, but he now faces charges for three separate counts of first-degree child abuse. Each charge is punishable by a maximum of 15 years in state prison.
