LEWISTON, Mich. (AP) - A man shot his father-in-law and a woman to death at their northern Michigan home, then drove 300 miles to Indiana where he shot himself in the head and died, authorities said Tuesday.

The victims were Lewiston residents Ronald V. Smith, 70, and Jean E. Carpenter, 82. The suspect, Lewiston resident Louis Tantalo, 50, was the estranged husband of Smith's daughter, the Montmorency County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies found Smith and Carpenter on Monday at the home, 90 miles south of the tip of the Lower Peninsula. Autopsies Tuesday at Spectrum Health Center showed both had been shot in the head.

Tantalo was discovered Sunday in his car with a gunshot wound to the head at Chain O'Lakes State Park in Albion, Ind., the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

Emergency personnel were called to a park pavilion about 1:20 p.m. Sunday after a woman visiting the park noticed a man in a parked vehicle needed help, Indiana Conservation Officer Rodney Clear told The News-Sun of Kendalville, Ind.

The woman notified a park employee, who called 911. Indiana park officials said the man left a suicide note.

He died at a hospital eight hours later.
