Allegedly caused gas leak that led to explosion

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - A teen has been arrested in connection to an explosion that leveled an abandoned house and damaged two others in Muskegon.

The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to 24 Hour News8 that a 16-year-old male has been arrested. Charges are expected to be filed Monday.

The explosion that demolished the abandoned residence in the 1600 block of Elwood Street happened around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Other abandoned residences on both sides were damaged. One had its windows blown out and the other lost its roof. Flying debris also damaged some nearby vehicles.

The explosion caused a small fire that was soon extinguished by the Muskegon Fire Department.

The prosecutor's office said the teen allegedly went to the now-destroyed abandoned home to collect scrap metal.

He realized that the utilities were still on in the house and left, but there was already a gas leak. That leak led to the explosion, authorities said.

Police were tipped off by someone who heard the teen talking about it, according to authorities. They are now investigating to see if anyone else was involved.
