Shot Muskegon Sgt. expected to be OK

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - The Muskegon police officer shot in the leg over the weekend is expected to be fine.

The county prosecutor confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 that the officer shot was Det. Sgt. Monica Shirey, a longtime department veteran.

Shirey was shot around 3:30 a.m. Saturday while assisting the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department at a domestic dispute in the 4700 block of Oak Road near E. River Road in Cedar Creek Township.

"It's well-established through factual analysis that a domestic violence call is one of the most dangerous calls a law enforcement officer can respond to," said Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler.

That dispute was an argument between a man and his wife that spiraled wildly out of control, neighbors said. The suspect allegedly fired shots at both a neighbor who friends said was trying to help and officers responding to the scene.

After the suspect fired at Shirey, four other officers returned fire and the suspect was wounded.

The suspect, 44-year-old Paul Osborn, remained hospitalized Monday but is expected to make a full recovery.

The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office has not yet received all police reports on the incident. It has therefore not yet determined exactly what charges Osborn will face. A decision on that could come down this week.

Osborn does have a history of run-ins with police.

Sources say Osborn was confronted after staff at Murphy's -- an area strip club -- called police when he refused to leave the establishment.

When officers got there, a physical altercation ensued. The officer in that case was not hurt. Osborn was arrested, served jail time and was put on probation that ran out last year.
